Controlling refrigerant flow is a fundamental component of a working refrigeration system.  The Refrigerant Control Devices chapter of the Refrigeration Volume deals with the operation and selection of various refrigerant flow control devices.  Component schematics are provided in many cases to illustrate the proper functioning of the flow control device.
